Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Chengdu

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Chengdu is also known by its Chinese name "Pinganqiao" Church. It was built in A.D. 1904 and is located at 25 Xihuamen Street in the Qingyang District of Chengdu.

The Cathedral covers an area of 16566.3 square meters and has a floor space of 8508.5 square meters. The buildings consist in the Cathedral, the Bishop’s office and his residence.

The Cathedral sits in the west and faces the east. It is shaped as a cross symbol and the facade architecture is of Byzantine style architecture. The Cathedral and its surrounding buildings constitute the Chinese character “悚” (song3) meaning "fear". This character holds the same sense of fear as in the Book of Wisdom “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of the wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). The right part of this character itself means "rule", which also represents the function of this building as a Cathedral, just as Jesus said in the Gospel: “I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18). This aspect is typical of West Sichuan Catholic buildings and propagated to both East and West giving birth to a special architecture type.
